FAQs About Deer Fence Installation
Deer fencing is a high-tensile woven wire barrier that keeps animals in or out, depending on your needs. It typically stands eight feet tall. Professional deer fence installation involves clearing the fence line, setting braced corner and end posts, driving line posts, then stretching and tensioning the wire so it stays tight for decades. Small garden projects can be a DIY job if you have the tools, but acreage installations require specialized tensioning equipment.
Eight feet is the standard, and for good reason. Deer are swift, agile, high-jumping animals that can clear a four- or six-foot barrier with ease, even at a young age. The taller the fence, the less likely an intrusion. On sloped ground we may recommend additional height on the downhill side, since deer gain effective jump height from elevated terrain.
There's no minimum. Straight Shooter Game Fencing can supply materials for a small home garden or send a crew to enclose hundreds to thousands of acres. The size of the project affects cost per foot — larger perimeters typically bring the per-foot price down.
You can, but it's a short-term fix. Extensions add stress to posts that weren't engineered for eight feet of load, and they tend to sag. If you plan to keep a garden or crop for multiple years, a purpose-built deer fence is the better investment. That said, if you're only protecting one or two trees or a small bed of low-lying plants, a cage or overhead barrier from your local hardware store may be all you need.
Yes. Properly installed and maintained deer fence — also called game fence — significantly reduces visits from more aggressive animals, including coyotes, wolves, and foxes. For predators that dig rather than jump, we can add a buried apron or bottom tension wire during installation.
Deer fencing keeps animals in as effectively as it keeps them out. A perimeter fence lets you control genetics, manage herd density, and prevent your investment from wandering onto neighboring property. It's a core part of any serious game management plan and makes for a safer, more productive hunt for you and your guests.
Yes. Deer fencing can be installed on virtually any terrain. Where water crosses the fence line, we build a custom water gap that won't obstruct flow or wash out in heavy rain. We also routinely install on rocky, sandy, hilly, and uneven ground — terrain is a planning consideration, not an obstacle.
A deer fence installed by Straight Shooter Game Fencing should last at least 50 years. High-tensile wire and properly braced, correctly set posts are what separate a fence that lasts five decades from one that needs replacing in ten. Severe weather — tornadoes, flooding, hurricanes — can damage even the highest-quality fence.
Your fence can take a great deal of abuse and will hold up through most weather. If a fallen tree, erosion, or a vehicle does cause damage, we offer repair services. We stand behind our work with a lifetime warranty on workmanship for every deer fence we install.
A small garden enclosure can be finished in a day or two. A few hundred acres typically takes several weeks, depending on terrain, weather, and how much brush has to be cleared first. We'll give you a projected timeline with your estimate.
Ideally, yes. A clear fence line means faster installation and a straighter, tighter fence. If you'd rather not handle it, we can clear the line as part of the project and will include it in your estimate.
DIY makes sense for a small garden with rolled fencing. Beyond that, high-tensile wire has to be tensioned correctly or it will sag and fail, and corner and brace assemblies must be built to handle real load. Professional deer fence installation costs more up front and lasts decades longer, which is where the actual savings are.
